New Daniel Abraham book covers

Courtesy of Jussi at the Westeros.org forum, here are the covers for Daniel Abraham's two 2011 releases.

First up in April is The Dragon's Path, the first volume of The Dagger and the Coin:

Not bad. Possibly a little generic. The UK fantasy market is oversaturated with various brown-shaded covers featuring swords. It's not bad, it just runs the risk of getting lost on the shelves.

Next up in June is Leviathan Wakes, the first volume of The Expanse. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck are co-authoring this under the pen-name James S.A. Corey.

This cover is quite nice, and puts me in mind of those excellent 1970s and 1980s SF covers by the likes of Peter Elson. Sounds like it could be old-school space opera fun.

    Ty Franck, GRRM's assistant?

  2. The Dragon's path is okay. Falling pebbles can start a landslide. What should have been a small summer spat between gentlemen is spiraling out of control. Dark forces are at work, fanning the flames that will sweep the entire region onto The Dragon's Path – the path of war.

  3. I looked at the cover for Leviathan Wakes and immediately fell in love, don't know how, don't care. But it's true that The Dagger and the Coin cover looks a bit iffy, but then again the Long Price Quartet covers I ended up with in Australia were fairly generic; dudes with swords and billowing coats on the covers. Still, I might pick it up if I finish the final Long Price book,
Any idea when these are coming out next year?

  4. Leviathan Wakes is a gorgeous cover. Very evocative. The Dragon's Path would be great if they got rid of that stupid sword. The covers for The Long Price Quartet were terible as well. It screamed generic fantasy when the series was anything but. Very misleading.

  5. "Ty Franck, GRRM's assistant?"

I believe that is correct. Franck created the setting and background for an SF roleplaying campaign that Abraham (and others, but not GRRM I believe) played in and he and Abraham then recast it as an SF book series.

  7. I'm gonna read both, too. The Long Price Quartet showed Abraham knows his trade. I'm especially giddy about "Leviathan Wakes", though. Kickass Space Opera is right up my alley. Love that blurb. And yeah, the cover's great.

  8. Interesting the cover art is so immediately grabbing - in my opinion it is evocative of the late John Berkey's excellent work... the coloration and style is similair.
