BioWare have released a new trailer for their upcoming remake of the original Mass Effect trilogy.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition comprises the original three games - Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010) and Mass Effect 3 (2012) - and all of their DLC, big and small. The games' graphics have been remastered in 4K with new lighting effects (including quite a lot more lens flare) and there has been work done to smooth out the inconsistencies between the first game and the other two. You will also now be able to create a character and guide them through all three games, and some of the oddities of the first game (like how inventory and character advancement is handled, and the notoriously flaky driving sections) have been smoothed out and made more like the other two games.
There have been improvements to character customisation, with characters given a greater variety in hairstyle options, and the "default" female Shepard from Mass Effect 3 will now be available to play from the start of the saga.
However, in a more controversial move, BioWare have removed multiplayer from the Legendary Edition version of Mass Effect 3, noting that the work involved to update it would have been counter-productive and may have split the still-surprisingly-popular multiplayer scene for the original version of the game. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) is also not included and the collection will reportedly launch as a full price modern game, to the fury of some fans (particularly people who own prior versions of the games, or bought all three on original release at full price each).
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition launches on 14 May on PC, PlayStation 5 and X-Box Series X. BioWare are currently working on a fifth Mass Effect game, but little is known about it at the moment.
