The emergence of blogs and Wikipedia are expressions of this same impulse, to act (write) first and think (filter) later. I have a picture of the hundreds of millions people online at this very minute. To my eye they are not wasting time with silly associative links, but are engaged in a more productive way of thinking then the equivalent hundred of millions people were 50 years ago.

This approach does encourage tiny bits, but surprisingly at the very same time, it also allows us to give more attention to works that are far more complex, bigger, and more complicated than ever before. These new creations contain more data, require more attention over longer periods; and these works are more successful as the Internet expands. This parallel trend is less visible at first because of a common short sightedness that equates the Internet with text.

[...]

These vast epics like Lost and The Wire had multiple interweaving plot lines, multiple protagonists, an incredible depth of characters and demanded sustained attention that was not only beyond previous TV and 90-minute movies, but would have shocked Dickens and other novelists of yore. They would marvel: "You mean they could follow all that, and then want more? Over how many years?" I would never have believed myself capable of enjoying such complicated stories, or caring about them to put in the time. My attention has grown. In a similar way the depth, complexity and demands of games can equal these marathon movies, or any great book."

Link is here: http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2010/01/the_2-billion-e.php

Has modern technology expanded our appetite for the Arc stories?Tree Froghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02332609654612510967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-43934710658806195712010-01-11T16:31:20.014+00:002010-01-11T16:31:20.014+00:00It's a bit more complicated than that. HBO initally offered two 12-episode seasons and had to give him one more for Season 4 (due to the cancellation of the planned Carcetti-centric spin-off series, meaning the election storyline had to be concluded in Season 4 instead). They seem to have reduced Season 5 to make up for it, and then dropped it down another one to 10 episodes, maybe for financial reasons.Adam Whiteheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11383677312079611311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-38465518529615532842010-01-11T08:18:17.309+00:002010-01-11T08:18:17.309+00:00One minor nit-pick: HBO forced the truncation of T...One minor nit-pick: HBO forced the truncation of The Wire's last season from 13 to 10 episodes - for financial reasons apparently.

The storylines suffered for the reduction, but the series as a whole remains the best television ever made.Tree Froghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02332609654612510967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-37324389980562444542010-01-08T20:50:47.986+00:002010-01-08T20:50:47.986+00:00Great conclusion to a well-written series of artic...Great conclusion to a well-written series of articles. I have to say that we're really spoilt for choice at the moment wrt series that have Arcs but I agree that the approach can be incredibly hit and miss. And I do find it hard to jump onto a series that I know has Arcs for fear I won't be able to follow (much as those people who tried to follow Season 4 of Angel).

Howabout the use of the little clip segment at the beginning of shows that are Arc-ing? The bit that tries to bring new viewers in? Successful? Useless? Nice recap only for those who have been watching the series already? Personally, if this goes over three or four minutes I get an 'uh oh' feeling if it isn't a series I've been following closely, because it suggests I'll be playing catch up during the whole episode!Magemandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08986754628836562869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-28070375915414785152010-01-08T07:11:45.083+00:002010-01-08T07:11:45.083+00:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.jsalexandrahttp://alias.download-tvshows.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-91661781056750753022010-01-08T05:16:31.614+00:002010-01-08T05:16:31.614+00:00Hey Adam
