I'm a hard core trekker and I was not disappointed or upset by much that was done in the movie. The method of reboot was elegant and respectful to the true blue fans.

His comments about Scotty's actor I'm in complete disagreement with. While his accent my vary somewhat, he does the roll with energy and does mimic Scott in many ways. The comment about comic relief I found odd as this was often Scott's role: Wrath of Khan (shore leave, no dust in engineering), Generations: ("Something wrong with your seat captain?" "Brought a tear to me eye", "Finding retirement a bit..."

I'll say the same for Chekhov. Again in TOS, he was often a form of comic relief. And let us not forget that with all the pain and tragedy, comic moments were needed frequently just to allow the audience a moments respite.

I can't say enough about all the actor's performances except perhaps Uhura. I found the romance contrived and distracting. If anyone reading this has served in the military, they would understand how many court martial infractions were done by her character in the short movie time: Leaving her post without authorization and without relief. Fraternizing with a superior officer (although tolerated even today when there is no direct command, this is simply not done for someone under your direct command. The movie despite itself shows just why this is so)!

I do agree with him about the water turbine. Just unnecessary especially when you consider the cut scene with you Jim and George (Samuel) Kirk. This was a good sequence and would have further established why Jim went is wayward way as a youth...especially when George tells him he has always been the "good kid" thus, pushing him into rebellion.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03487011857989957236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-27763172677115431102009-05-20T21:04:37.022+00:002009-05-20T21:04:37.022+00:00I loved this film for many reasons (including Simo...I loved this film for many reasons (including Simon Pegg's totally dodgy Scottish accent and weird alien sidekick) but I can just see the Orange phone advert.

"Ok Eric, now your character is going to pick up the phone and let Romulus know that there will be a supernova problem and they need to resettle on a different planet"!Clairenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-16933110963026080022009-05-12T21:04:00.000+00:002009-05-12T21:04:00.000+00:00I think this link is appropriate.

It was fun, pure and simple. And very Hollywood, which I usually don't like, but good grief, it was Star Trek. I got to watch Star Trek with Spock, Kirk, and the gang, and also introduce my daughter to the Star Trek universe (she's now watching the original series). Think nostalgia here, a homecoming. I've discovered there's nothing better than to have your child fall in love with something you grew up with!

Zachary Quinto was fantastic. The best scene of the whole movie was at the end with the two Spocks together. And the original music at the end! I was in ST heaven.

I'm old enough that I watched the original Star Trek back in the 60's, and had to laugh because 1) Kirk getting beat up a lot, yep, that was there; 2) the ice planet stupid creature that couldn't possibly be evolutionarily correct, yep, stuff like that was in the original series; 3) non-sensical physics, yes, there was that in the original series, etc., lots of homage to laugh at.

For future ST movies, I hope they do take into consideration: "to boldly go where no man has gone before, to discover new worlds and new civilizations, etc." And, I'm really only a fan of the original series, and I got to watch the movie with other obviously original Trekkers (Trekkies??) as well as a younger generation.

Obviously satisfied...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-49165366307475371282009-05-11T07:31:00.000+00:002009-05-11T07:31:00.000+00:00Aye, this might be the reason for the hype.
Regar...Aye, this might be the reason for the hype.

Regardless of ranking, I pretty much agree with you there, I have a more general problem with the movie.

Not only that the storytelling was rather weak and focusing on almost forced nonstop action, resulting in the silly watertube scene, the ice planet Star Wars reference, something got lost.

You made a Star Wars vs a more thoughtful Star Trek comparison, and I think you hit the nail.

Undiscovered Country had ideology conflicts, emotional and personal conflicts, a positive spirit that all this can be overcome.

What has "Star Trek"? Kirk and Spock are now friends, woohoo. Not much meaning and thoughtfulness in the entire teenie action movie. Apart from the crew, it is pretty much just a very generic modern action flic.

There are rumors J.J. Abrams is also going to direct the next Star Trek movie.

Maybe he will manage to capture a bit more of the spirit of the series, especially TOS. Now that he introduced the new "old" crew.Longaschttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14315739202508784897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-21046518878317481082009-05-11T07:23:00.000+00:002009-05-11T07:23:00.000+00:00Pretty much agree with you Adam. But enjoyed it for what it was - plus it probably helped I was slightly pissed beforehand so went in feeling good.Jebushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00985667608602099242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-10286525745722963162009-05-11T01:14:00.000+00:002009-05-11T01:14:00.000+00:00My theory is that the movie got so many good revie...My theory is that the movie got so many good reviews purely because after the last few TREK movies expectations were way low. There was also the feeling that TREK was tired and had run its course and needed a good ten-year or longer absence for the audience to get nostalgic and want to see it again, with a lot of people thinking that five years wasn't enough of a break. So all round I think people weren't expecting much from this at all and the fact it's positive elements (particularly the crew) are so good has now caused an opposing over-rating of it.

If I had to create a list of TREK movies, this one would firmly be in the middle somewhere. Not as bad as FINAL FRONTIER but not as good as WRATH OF KHAN or UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY.Adam Whiteheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11383677312079611311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-89607927617893922202009-05-10T23:40:00.000+00:002009-05-10T23:40:00.000+00:00I agree with Scotty and Chekov. He got better late in the movie.

Too many cuts, too fast... and J.J. Abrams again does not only show that logic is nothing to worry about, but something he likes to kick with the feet repeatedly.

Abrams has potential and is Hollywoods new darling anyways, but I pray for the day when people in Hollywood finally realize that CGI and strong characters and nonstop action with fast cuts are quite good, but even better with a good plot/story... then you will also remember the movie.

I just wonder that the movie got so many extremely positive reviews.Longaschttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14315739202508784897noreply@blogger.com
