First I was shocked at the notion of no US drama having a black lead for 20+ years before DS9. On second thought, it's not that shocking, but then I wondered if it's true. Looking at The Mod Squad, it was a cop show with white and black co-leads - the black actor getting second billing. If that counts, shouldn't something like Miami Vice? What about Avery Brooks' own A Man Called Hawk where he was definitely the lead, even if it was a spin-off? I also had a quick look and found at least two shows in the 1992 fall season (so beating DS9 by a few months) that even had female black leads (with first billing).
So unless I misunderstand the definition of "drama" here, it looks like the situation was not quite as dire.TerokNornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-32545366194230102802016-05-31T17:04:11.963+00:002016-05-31T17:04:11.963+00:00It strikes me that there remain a lot of fans who ...It strikes me that there remain a lot of fans who reject Deep Space Nine because it explored Star Trek canon rather than create its own (until, of course, the Dominion arc expanded, which a lot of these fans may not even know about). It's easier to appear remaining eternally fresh, like Doctor Who, when the main character is recast every few years, even though the storytelling remains essentially the same. What fans complain about can be some of the most interesting stuff to follow...Tony Laplumehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07854455859399339169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-62686358525339381162016-05-30T10:49:05.467+00:002016-05-30T10:49:05.467+00:00In fact, if the inflation calculator at http://inf...In fact, if the inflation calculator at http://inflationdata.com/Inflation/Inflation_Calculators/Inflation_Rate_Calculator.asp can be trusted (the first one to come up with a quick google search) then 12 million in 1992 would easily beat the Lost pilot when adjusted for inflation...Jenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03623941508503788134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7703856341303488608.post-20598874147895540742016-05-29T17:42:01.800+00:002016-05-29T17:42:01.800+00:00The fact that the record for most expensive pilot ...The fact that the record for most expensive pilot wasn't beaten for TWELVE YEARS shows how crazy having a pilot be that expensive at the time was.
