Marvel releases first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trailer

Disney and Marvel have unveiled the first full trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, their big summer Marvel Cinematic Universe film and the most 'out there' of their films to date.

Set in space, Guardians will chronicle the adventures of five mismatched 'heroes' who get into conflicts with evil forces etc. The movie will be more tangentially connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe than their other films (i.e. don't expect Iron Man to show up halfway through) but will partly set things up for Avengers: Age of Ultron, which will follow in 2015.

I am not acquainted with the Guardians as a superhero team, although I did thoroughly enjoy the Rocket Raccoon solo strip in the 1980s (when it ran as the back-up strip in the Marvel UK Transformers comic), which was enough to make me want to check this out. The trailer is also pretty cool. It's good to see Marvel embracing full SF craziness for once.

  1. Really? when did it run in Transformers? I've got 1-30 sitting about somewhere but don't remember him!

  2. It's a gamble, though--will audiences go for this (no matter how well made it is). It's very different than any of the Marvel properties out there.

  3. ok, so knowing nothing about it - could be awesome, could be complete ass. But at least their swinging for the fences, can't ask for more than that at this stage!

  4. Rocket Raccoon ran from issue #55 to #69, way back in 1986 :)

  5. Aaah, cheers Adam. I'd given up on it by then. Even the 12 year old me had noticed the "nobel autobots strive to protect the earth" vibe of the first few issues had changed to an alogether more american "Stick it in neutral Megatron" by that point. Bloody hell I was pretentious :D

  6. You might want to check out Marvel's big SF saga: Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest (where these modern Guardians first appear), Nova , Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos Imperative.

Here's a more comprehensive list, with reading order and all that. Personally, I recommend the above mentioned titles.

  7. Annihilation is great, but this team of Guardians actually came together in Annihilation: Conquest and their story basically ended in Thanos Imperative.
There's a current running series of Guardians of the Galaxy but honestly, it's a pale shadow of the team in Annihilation. Warning though if you intend to pick the old series up; don't get too attach to the characters. A lot of them die in the line of duty.
