Warner Brothers has finally greenlit its long-gestating Game of Thrones movie. The film will by directed by Owen Harris, written by Beau Willmon and will hit cinemas on 6 June 2029.
The film will tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror, the Targaryen warlord who invaded the continent of Westeros with his two sister-wives and their three dragons, and merged the warring Seven Kingdoms into one (apart from Dorne, that's a whole other story). HBO had long mooted whether to adapt this story into a television series, but perceived similarities with both Game of Thrones and spin-off prequel House of the Dragon, plus the significant budget requirements for set-pieces like the Field of Fire and the Burning of Harrenhal, seem to have convinced them that the silver screen is the place for the story instead. It would also allow them to cast higher-profile talent, with rich roles like Aegon I Targaryen, Visenya, Rhaenys, Orys Baratheon, Torrhen Stark, Argilac the Arrogant and Harren the Black likely to attract top talent.
Remarkably, the movie will arrive on cinema screens ten years after Game of Thrones concluded and eighteen years after it started.
Although it looks like a stand-alone at the moment, if a hit the movie may provide a springboard for further Westeros experiences on the big screen. HBO is wrapping up House of the Dragon with its fourth season, whilst A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will launch its second season in early 2027, followed by a third season in 2028, which would exhaust George R.R. Martin's source material. The plan after that point remains unclear.
