PACIFIC RIM 2 confirmed for 2017

Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 will be released on 7 April 2017. He and Zak Penn will be writing the script, working from outlines and drafts by Travis Beacham (who wrote the first movie).

In addition, there will be more Pacific Rim comic books and a new animated series as well. It appears that Legendary Pictures have decided to go the whole hog in franchising the movie after taking their time to consider its modest success. The first movie, released in July 2013, made $411 million worldwide from a budget of $190 million. However, the film did rather poorly in the United States and was only a really big smash hit in China, where it made over $114 million.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the first film, I approve this news and will be there to see the sequel.

Happy to see this as I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie. I would give my eye teeth for a studio to greenlight At The Mountains of Madness, tho.

I get the sad feeling that this along with Michael Mann's mooted Gates of Fire will never be made.

Nice. Hopefully without the fake Aussie accents this time. :S

The first hour of the sequel is basically the cast going "Why didn't we use the sword before rather than all that fancy rubbish that didn't work?"

Sorry but I thought this news was super lame. Del Toro is a really cool, talented guy who is having a very disappointing career in my opinion. Hasn't come close to making a really great movie yet. I'd love to see Mountains of Madness. Thought Pacific Rim was a boring mess. So dark ans rainy you couldnt see a thing. It kind of flopped and no one here in the States is clambering for a sequel. Del Toro sadly continues to spin his wheels.

I believe Pan's Labyrinth was a really great movie.
