In the Westeros link, someone points out he also had a letter in AVENGERS around the same time, which he signed with the double R.IIRC, he started his writing career as 'George Martin' but decided to whack the initials in to avoid confusion with the Beatles' manager. Apparently it was one too many, "Where's Ringo?" joke whilst checking into a hotel that made him take that decision.
It took him 3 years to write that letter.
Is that the same Paul Gambaccini he mentions? They'd both be around the same age...
