George R.R. Martin's first-ever published piece of writing

A good find by HaraktheHirsute on the Westeros.org board. This is the letter George R.R. Martin wrote to Marvel Comics in 1963, published in Fantastic Four #20 when he was 15:

There you go. From such small seeds etc.

See George only had the one R in those days.

In the Westeros link, someone points out he also had a letter in AVENGERS around the same time, which he signed with the double R.

IIRC, he started his writing career as 'George Martin' but decided to whack the initials in to avoid confusion with the Beatles' manager. Apparently it was one too many, "Where's Ringo?" joke whilst checking into a hotel that made him take that decision.

It took him 3 years to write that letter.

Is that the same Paul Gambaccini he mentions? They'd both be around the same age...
