Interview with R. Scott Bakker

I recently interviewed R. Scott Bakker for the Orbit Blog. We talked about his epic fantasy sequence, the influence of George R.R. Martin and the prospects of a Prince of Nothing film or TV series appearing, as well as some info about his next book, The Unholy Consult (due for 2013 publication, it looks like).

Good interview! That's a bummer about the book being pushed back... *shakes fists at the heavens*

I love his books, but man does he always come across as a guy who thinks the world of himself.

Nice interview Wertmeister. Although I have to say his answer to your first question puts me right off him. I think I am a fu****g legend but I dont shout it out to everyone. Its aboot a bit of humility, he comes accross as a bit of an ar**. If Abecrombie had said that statement there would have been some humourility to it. Excuse me i have had few beers, but you know what i mean.

I remember hearing about an Aussie author over in the US who failed to get an audience for being too self-deprecating. When in an interview, he mocked his book a bit to generate a few laughs, a tactic that would work well in Australia, and the interviewer ending up asking, "Then, why should we read your book?" in a rather negative way. Some people expect them to be talked up, and the first question asked of Scott was begging for it.

I hope that was what happened, because otherwise I would find the response a bit offputtingly arrogant, even though I do adore his books.

Yep, that first comment is arrogant, but he makes up for it with his awesome account of Diefenbaker's Canadian eugenics program. Really funny.

Good interview, Adam.
