Brandon Sanderson update on A MEMORY OF LIGHT

Brandon Sanderson has Tweeted that the final Wheel of Time novel, A Memory of Light, is about one-third done. He's caught up with some material he worked on whilst working on the first leg of the final three books back in 2007-09, and the percentage completed bar on his website should move up significantly in the next week or so.

A Memory of Light is currently planned for release in November 2012. Tor have also recently announced that Michael Whelan will be creating the cover art for the e-edition of the series, though Darrell K. Sweet will be providing the hardcover image for the sake of uniformity with the earlier books in the series.

EDIT: In a further Tweet, Sanderson confirms that he hopes to turn the book in to Tor in November this year.

Is the expected date really 11/12? I thought it was first quarter '12?

As bad as Sweet has been, I have to applaud Tor for actually having a unified cover. This is one series they easily could have re-jacketed many times and they haven't...unlike Malazan...or worse yet ASoIaF. :) (not that I need to tell you)

The original plan was February-March 2012. However, Tor and Harriet are apparently concerned that TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT had too many typos and errors. They want more time to go through the next book and make the final one as accurate and tight as possible.

However, Sanderson has said that he wants to hand the book in this November. If he succeeds, Tor could take twice as long as they did on ToM and still get AMoL in the summer of 2012. It depends on if they feel the November 2012 date is final or if they can bring it up if necessary.

According to Brandon at the Suvudu interview he gave at Comic-Con, the book could be out any time between March and November 2012.

Maybe - I still think changing Sweet early on would have been preferable. But good news!

Thanks for the update, it would be kind of crazy in my opinion for the book to take a year to be edited and published, oh well.

Also, didn't he just start writing in January? So as of 7 months he is like 30 percent done, but hopes to finish the last 70% in 3 months? Wonder if that means most of the ending sequences are already written (by Jordan?).

I believe quite a bit of the ending was written by Jordan, yes, and it sounds like the middle section is also like that (the book's gone from 27 to 32% in a week and apparently will go higher still in the next few days).

I must admit that November sounds tight, but then he turned around ToM in an almost impossible-seeming amount of time as well, so we'll see. If the November 2012 date is pretty much locked, then he can go past the end-of-year deadline by several months without causing any further delay, of course.

So sweet.. Like all books are written starting from page one, and finishing with a final period on the end. More likely, the end of some story lines will be written first, including the end of the series, and than cross references will have to be made throughout the book, and gaps filled in so it all comes together. That probably takes longest of all, and is something in which jordan was king. I prefer the book delayed and properly finished! But please, no George 'takes-5-years' Martin tricks please!
